Firstly it is probably worth putting my cards on the table. I quite the Hoosiers, and the Pigeon Detectives and the Wombats and many of the other "Identikit indy" bands mentioned in the article.
However I really don't see this as a problem and think the article misses one really important point.
Music genres go through phases. One minute everyone is into Dance music and Ibiza, Ministry of Sound and so called superclubs are in fashion. Then along comes Pop Stars...et el and everyone loves pop groups again. Then the Artic Monkeys released “I bet you look good on the Dancefloor” and Indy music is the new pop - I think that is a bloody good thing.
All of the popular bands around at the moment - yes including Scouting For Girls, play their own music and in most cases have a hand in writing it as well. This has created a whole new fan base for guitar based music and has encouraged many people who a few years ago would have never considered going to an Indy gig and would be much happier watching four girls miming songs they didn’t write on a stage.
Ok so not all of it is amazing and some of it does sound the same, but that is the same with any in fashion genre at any one time. The thing with the current fashion (for that is what it is.) is that maybe, just maybe, it will encourage more people to discover bands they would never have heard before, and if they don’t at least they are watching someone with talent on the stage rather than a glorified clothes model.
